Wesselton in Ermelo was identified as one of the five areas in the Highveld Priority Area where ambient air quality monitoring is required. This area was selected primarily due to the fact that no air monitoring is currently undertaken in Ermelo and due to many complaints from the public of respiratory problems due to the emissions from coal transportation trucks travelling through the town. There have also been comments that pollution is transported from towns as far as Secunda when winds originate from the west. The Tusiville Clinic site in Wesselton was considered the most appropriate as it is well situated to monitor emissions and resultant pollutant concentrations from domestic fuel burning, coal transport trucks and long range transport from industrial areas to the west. The site is secure and is owned by Msukaligwa Local Municipality.
